WHY MANDHELING ISN’T A PLACE NAME >>
“A wild, untamed expression of North Sumatra’s rich heritage. Nurtured patiently through an extended natural process, this Mandailing gem bursts with the bright, wine-like tartness of fresh grapes and lush tropical fruits. A smooth, comforting almond finish beautifully tames this bold, exhilarating cup.”
Grape comes first, but not the sweetness of grapes. Instead, it is the tart, tartaric acidity that makes your mouth water from the very first sip. Behind it comes a broad, sweet wave of ripe tropical fruit, followed by a dry, clean almond finish. The body is medium, and the flavors become more expressive as the coffee cools.
Mandheling is one of the most famous Sumatran coffee names in the world, but it is not a geographical place name. Mandailing is the name of an ethnic group. Mandheling is simply a foreign spelling that became established as a commercial coffee name. To this day, even coffee from Gayo and Lintong is still sold under that name.
This Arabica coffee, however, genuinely comes from the region itself: Ulu Pungkut, Mandailing Natal. Pakantan is among the areas where Arabica coffee was first cultivated in Mandailing during the colonial era.
The Natural Extended process involves deliberately extending fermentation and drying. This is where the wine-like, tartaric acidity comes from.
Everyone uses the name. Not everyone knows the coffee behind it.
