This varietal was discovered in 1988 on a farmer's estate in Lintongnihuta and was distributed by the government around 2005. Its name has nothing to do with taste. The trees bear fruit at three years old—a year earlier than most arabica trees—allowing farmers who took out loans at planting to pay off their debt after the very first harvest instead of the second. These arabica coffee beans hail from Ulu Pungkut, Mandailing Natal, at 1200–1400 masl, and are processed via fullwash—washed clean, not wet-hulled—allowing the orange and palm sugar notes to emerge cleanly without being masked by earthy flavors. A name that makes no attempt to sound expensive. We like it that way.
