Meet Laurina: The "Coffee Anomaly" That’s Safe for Your Stomach

Meet Laurina: The "Coffee Anomaly" That’s Safe for Your Stomach

For some people, drinking coffee is like a gamble between feeling wide awake or having a stomach that “screams” all day long. If you're part of the team that has to drink antacids before drinking coffee, please read this article. There is one coffee variety that seems to have been created by nature as an apology to those of us with sensitive stomachs.

Meet Laurina. The Rare “Anomaly”
Why is it called an anomaly? Laurina (Coffea arabica var. laurina) is not a laboratory-engineered coffee that has been deliberately made low in caffeine. It is a natural mutation of the Bourbon variety found on the island of Réunion (formerly known as Île Bourbon) in the Indian Ocean. Its tree shape is unique, conical like a small pine tree with pointed leaves. However, its main appeal lies not in the tree itself, but in what is inside its beans.

There are two technical reasons why Laurina has become the new favorite for people with ulcers or GERD:

  1. Naturally Low Caffeine: On average, Arabica coffee contains around 1.2% - 1.5% caffeine. Laurina? It only has around 0.4% - 0.7% caffeine.
    1. This is very low! Since caffeine is one of the triggers for excess stomach acid production, this low content keeps your stomach calm

  2. Low Acidity: In addition to its low caffeine content, Laurina's flavor profile tends to be less “sharp.” It doesn't have the piercing acidity of East African coffees, making it gentler on the stomach lining.

How does it taste? Still delicious, of course! You might be thinking, “If it has less caffeine, doesn't it taste bland?” Quite the opposite! Laurina is often referred to as one of the most delicious coffees in the world. Because caffeine has a naturally bitter taste, the low caffeine content in Laurina actually brings out its extraordinary sweetness.

When you try it, you will experience:

  • High sweetness (similar to brown sugar or honey).
  • Elegant floral and fruity notes.
  • A light and silky body (soft in the mouth).

Why is it so rare (and pricey)??

Although it sounds like a miracle solution, Laurina has one drawback: it is sensitive. Due to its low caffeine content (FYI, caffeine is actually a natural pesticide in coffee trees to repel insects), Laurina trees are susceptible to pests and produce low yields. That's why Laurina is often categorized as a rare specialty coffee and is priced slightly above average.

Conclusion

If you've almost given up on coffee because of stomach issues, Laurina is the “green light” you've been waiting for. You can enjoy your morning coffee ritual without the drama of bloating or heartburn. It may be a little hard to find, but once you do, your stomach will thank you.
